SpiritualHorseman.com isn’t going to change the world. Today’s Readings aren’t going to change the world either.
You are going to change the world.
Well, you can change the world if you wanted to. So, what does it take?
Going and Doing.
Yea, SpiritualHorseman.com is on the internet. So, you’ve got to go find a computer that’s connected in order to get the message. But, Today’s Readings (and the entirety of the Living Word) are in the all-time best selling book – The Bible. So it’s on Amazon.com, or at a Barnes and Noble, or Borders… And, guess what, there’s probably one in your home already.
But here’s the deal:
You don’t need either one.
(Whew! I can hear some of the crowd that reads this getting stirred up right now. No Bible!?!?!? In fact I’d be ducking walking sticks if some of the lovely women I knew were sitting next to me as I write this. 😉 )
For this command that I enjoin on you today
is not too mysterious and remote for you…
It’s not in the sky…Nor is it across the sea…
No, it is something very near to you,
already in your mouths and in your hearts;
you have only to carry it out.
That’s from todays first reading. You can find the whole thing by clicking here.
Some wonderful compliments have been reaching me regarding SpiritualHorseman.com. Some just say thanks, some share an experience, but some offer praise while deriding their own abilities to do the same thing.
But they can. You can.
Today’s Gospel is from Luke 10:25-37 and everyone knows it by the informal title – The Good Samaritan Story.
Yes, we should have compassion for our neighbors, but let’s focus on something else. The ending. Click this link and scroll to the bottom. The last sentence reads:
Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
Those first two guys, the priest and the Levite, they aren’t assholes. They were probably great people, with pure hearts and active prayer lives. In fact, back then, the Law stated that they shouldn’t get bloody which the fellow on the side of the road probably was. That would make them ‘unclean’. They actually had their spiritual Law in mind in their daily life. (Heck I wish I could just get that far.) But see what happens when you just Follow the “Rules”?
You walk to the other side of the road and continue on your way.
The Samaritan stepped outside of the box. Jesus said, “Go and Do…”
He’s an action kind of guy. Yes, he prayed often and we should as well. Yes, he studied the Law and we should as well. But none of that does much of anything if we don’t Go and Do.
So many lives are divided by two.
Our daily routine. And the church.
Remember there’s always an eye on you
as you live, but then judge from your perch.
For thoughts are so great, prayer so grand,
knowledge so often admired.
But nothing fulfills like a helping hand
to the weak, the poor and the tired.
So forget all the rules, the law and the word
He begs to this challenge we rise.
Keep them in mind, but to serve the Lord,
we should “Go.. and Do Likewise”.
