“You shouldn’t go just because you’re supposed to.”
“I don’t like the priest/preacher/brother/pastor.”
“I just don’t get anything out of it, so what’s the point?”
“Everybody in there is so fake, saying one thing and doing something else.”
… Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.”
Martha is so caught up in what someone else (Mary) is doing that she loses sight of her purpose. She’s serving Christ much in the same way that Abraham was serving the three men in the first reading from Genesis.
…Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet…
…Quick, three measures of fine flour! Knead it and make rolls…
…He ran to the herd, picked out a tender, choice steer…
…Then Abraham got some curds and milk,
as well as the steer that had been prepared,
and set these before the three men;
and he waited on them under the tree while they ate.
So what gives? Why is Abraham blessed with a child and Martha comes very close to ridicule?
Martha is selfish, living much like we do today – “What is everyone else doing and what do I need?”
She is so close… But, so VERY far away.
Abraham reversed it.
“What am I doing and what does everyone else need?”
If only we could have a heart like Abraham. (This is the same guy that was going to sacrifice his son, remember?) Time with God is the only way to develop such a heart.
What happens when you start to hang out with someone more and more? You start to behave more like them. So spend time with God.
Time in His Word. Time in prayer. And time in His House.
Going because your supposed to?
– Good. You are. Christ died because He was supposed to. Be glad that’s not being asked of you.
Don’t like your church leader?
– So what. He/She probably doesn’t like you either. You’re not there for them. Or, for you. You’re there to serve.
Not getting anything out of it?
– Our Lord didn’t ask us to go forth and eat fruit. He asked us to go forth and bare fruit. Get over yourself and if you think your church needs a little something more, make it happen.
Think the church is full of hypocrites?
– It is. So, get your rear to church and thank God for sending the only perfect being ever to die for your hypocrisy.
